In the performance MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS, 13 women tell their own stories about marriage. The aim of the project was to enable the women to change their realities as well as the realities of their societies using artistic tools such as film and theatre.
The overall purpose of the production was to empower women and young girls and promote their creativity and self-expression through various arts forms. The project built on the young people’s talents and interests – whether it is storytelling, dance, rap, poetry, theatre, etc. Through these creative art forms the participants developed and told their own stories.
Thereby, they communicated their frustrations, hopes, dreams etc. in a professional performance that is appealing to the audience and performed at eye level with the audience. This project was part of a process to prevent and counteract stereotypes by creating a nuanced understanding of different social groups and strengthen the sense of community and social cohesion in the Jordanian society. As a small part of the participants was Iraqi refugees, the project would also help breaking the stigmas towards this population group.
MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS production promoted the participation of women in democratic processes and networks at a local level by giving them the skills, motivation and personal strength to speak out and engage themselves in issues relevant to them.
