The performance VITMANS was about the personal stories of men and women in Egypt, Alexandria about gender issues. The main idea behind this project was to create a platform to explore gender issues and inequality between sexes. More specifically, C:NTACT aimed to raise a debate about gender, and in particular about relationships and understandings of gender roles in the Egyptian society.
The production aimed to apply theatre tools to articulate and present these issues on stage, executed entirely by the participants themselves. Articulating these personal stories about gender issues eventually led to establishing a platform for debate among the participants and a common and more nuanced understanding of gender issues.
The participants, mostly young people in their twenties, came from various religious and ethnic minorities as well as different social classes. Prior to the premiere of the play, the participants took part in a five week long workshop with professional directors and trainers from Egypt and Denmark. More than 300 people applied to be part of this project since interest for theatre is immense in Egypt. The play was seen by more than 2,600 people across Egypt. The production took place in Alexandria in order to target other big cities than Cairo.
